Niepoort Garrafeira Port 1940 — Bottled 1945, Decanted 1970 An extraordinary survivor from one of the most distinctive traditions in the history of Port. This exceptionally rare Niepoort Garrafeira Port 1940 was produced by the legendary Portuguese Port house Niepoort, established in Porto in 1842. Harvested in 1940, the wine was bottled in 1945 before continuing its remarkable maturation in large glass demijohns — the distinctive ageing technique that defines Niepoort’s celebrated Garrafeira Ports. After approximately 25 additional years ageing in glass, it was finally decanted in 1970 into the bottle in which it remains today. This unusual combination of ageing in wood followed by prolonged maturation in glass is one of the great peculiarities of Niepoort’s history and has made its old Garrafeira Ports highly sought after by collectors. The historic bottle retains its wonderfully aged original presentation, including the old “NIEPOORT’S 1940 PORT – RICH-RED” label, embossed Niepoort glass, original capsule and Instituto do Vinho do Porto guarantee seal No. 686260. More than 85 years after the 1940 harvest, this is not simply an old bottle of Port — it is a remarkable surviving piece of Portuguese wine history.
